Holly Parker Named Schiller Coastal Studies Center Director


parkeran education and research professional with extensive leadership experience in higher education, secondary education, corporate and not-for-profit environments, has spent her career focusing on creating and implementing implementing programs that support the development of an environmentally educated and committed population, leaders in sustainable development and blue economies – the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods livelihoods and jobs while maintaining healthy ocean ecosystems.

She comes to Bowdoin from the University of New England (UNE) where she has held several positions since 2015, most recently as Director of UNE North, the university’s Institute for North Atlantic Studies, where she was tasked with expanding the institute’s engagement. with academic, local and regional stakeholders and developing its research and program portfolio.

Previously, Parker worked as UNE’s Associate Provost for Strategic Initiatives and Chief Innovation Strategist.

At Bowdoin, Parker will be responsible for developing new initiatives that leverage SCSC’s strengths in ocean and environmental study, invite interdisciplinary faculty and student engagement, and connect to communities, organizations and coastal industries.

She will work with faculty across all departments to connect program offerings on the main campus to SCSC resources and facilities and contribute to other programmatic connections with the Roux Center for the Environment in Bowdoin, the John and Lile Center Gibbons for Arctic Studies and Bowdoin Science Station. on Kent Island.

Parker will also be responsible for fostering an inclusive and intellectually engaging environment that attracts and supports outstanding scholars, researchers, students and staff, and reinforces Bowdoin’s commitment to diversity, equity and diversity. inclusion.

Parker earned his bachelor’s degree at Dartmouth before earning his M.Ed. at Harvard and a Ph.D. in public policy at the Muskie School of Public Service.

Parker has published on the themes of climate change and the intersection of innovation and its opportunities with governance transformations and societal and ecological transitions along the Gulf of Maine.

Schiller Center for Coastal Studies

The Schiller Center for Coastal Studies is a unique site for teaching, learning and research, especially in the study of the ocean, the environment and the impact of climate change in the Gulf of Maine. SCSC facilities include a marine laboratory with flowing seawater and a sophisticated experimental seawater system capable of simulating climate change; a fleet of small vessels used for teaching and research; and a 155-foot jetty and wharf used for science and recreation. The jetty supports an array of ocean sensors monitoring water quality in real time and provides access to the Bowdoin Buoy, a project that allows continuous monitoring of Harpswell Sound.

This year-round coastal campus also includes a one-story, open-studio land lab especially suited for art work, a two-story farmhouse with a small classroom and dedicated computer lab, and hiking trails open to kids. members of the Bowdoin community and the general public; the site is also home to the Bowdoin Sailing team. The recent SCSC expansion, completed in 2021, marks a transformative moment in the history of this site, with the addition of a state-of-the-art 4,200 square foot dry lab adjacent to the marine lab; a 5,000 square foot living and learning building with ample meeting space, smart classroom, and lunchrooms; and three new residential cabins designed to support immersive learning and research, visiting residences, and community building. The SCSC operates with a talented staff that includes an Assistant Director, a Laboratory Instructor, a Research and Laboratory Support Technician, a Director of Marine Operations and a Custodian.
